Almost everyone suffers from conjunctivitis or pink eye at least once in a lifetime. This eye condition is characterized by reddening of the eyes and profuse watering caused by inflammation of the conjunctiva. This is a thin membrane that covers the front of the eyes and can swell due to bacterial or viral infection or some allergy. The deficiency of Vitamin A in the body can also cause conjunctivitis.
Medication and Treatments
Some common symptoms of conjunctivitis are irritation and swelling in the eyes, blurred vision and increased eye sensitivity to bright lights. Though this condition does not last for more than a few days, it can be quite painful. However, its can be cured easily by using some highly effective natural remedies that are given below.
- The eye irritation caused due to conjunctivitis can be quite stressful. An easy way to reduce this is by placing a wad of cotton that has been soaked in cow’s milk and sprinkled with potash alum powder over the infected eye. This will also provide relief from itchiness and redness of the eye.
- In order to reduce the pain, swelling and burning sensation of eyes during conjunctivitis you can mix some dried leaves of coriander in 50 ml of water and use the solution as an eye wash. Though this concoction is highly effective in treating conjunctivitis, it should be used with precaution if the patient suffers from asthma.
- As already mentioned, conjunctivitis can also be caused due to deficiency of Vitamin A in the body. If this is the case for you, you can easily remedy this by drinking raw juice of various green vegetables. Ideally, you should mix 300 ml of carrot juice with 200 ml of spinach juice and drink it on empty stomach in the morning for best results.

- You can also make an eyewash solution with Chamomile to prevent the pink eye infection from spreading to the other eye. To make this solution, you need to take one teaspoon of dried chamomile flowers that have been grinned into powder and add it to a cup of boiled water. Once the water has cooled down and absorbed all the elements of the flower, you can use this solution either as an eye wash or as cold compress to lessen the redness and pain caused by pink eye.
Increasing Vitamin B intake by including food items such as citrus fruits, banana, tomato, orange, curd, milk and green and leafy vegetables in the diet also helps in curing conjunctivitis.
