A common myth about acne that has been around for quite some time is that washing the face as many times as possible helps clear acne. Though washing your face is an effective way to keep it clean and get rid of accumulated dirt and oil, it should not be done more than twice a day. Ideally, you should wash your face with lukewarm water once in the morning before getting ready for school or work and once before going to bed at night.
The cleanser that you use to wash your face should be gentle, alcohol free and non-abrasive. Also, while applying the cleanser to your face, use only your fingertips instead of the palms of your hand. This reduces skin irritation, which in turn leads to breakouts. Scrubbing is a big no-no for acne prone skin as it can worsen the condition.

Steer clear of astringents, masks, toners and exfoliating creams that contain scrubbing particles. Moreover, if these products do not contain salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide, they will be of no help in clearing your skin. If you want your acne to heal without leaving behind any scars, avoid the urge to pick or squeeze them. This will only increase their healing time and cause scarring.
While selecting a sun screen for yourself, pick a water based formulation with an SPF of 30 or more. Basically, you need to look for skin care and make up products that are both oil-free and alcohol-free so that they do not clog pores and cause more breakouts.
